Department of Roads Passau

[1-3] Mobility is one of the important characteristics of our modern society. The modern man is on the move - to work, to friends, to sport, shopping, to the theatre, to a meeting or further in a weekend trip to Vienna or Prague - this list can be infinitely continued. The basis for this social, cultural and economic mobility is the availability of roads. All of these activities include the departure, the journey, the arrival, in short, the movement from A to B.

This concept is now clear: The visualisation of movement as an salient characteristic of mobility and also the main function of the Department of Roads.

The starting point were digital photographs of moving vehicles, taken at dusk or after dark. The movement was "captured" due to the long exposure times. A certain time is held in the photographs and therefore, a section of the movement sequence. The exposures were made in the administrative district of Passau therefore, the roads of the Passau area are also "captured".

The movement is fixed on glass plates, mounted so as to represent the perspective of a straight road. The glass borders acts to sharpen the contextual focus.

The plates are positioned in the entrance hall, the connecting area between outside and inside, the public area and the organisational work area. The effect is further enhanced by the architectural niche work and light in the form of daylight from above or after dark, the cones of artificial light from below.
